This is the first in a new range of Hollow Sun products called 'Alien Devices'.

With a unique and striking looking, highly functional GUI, Pulstar is the ultimate pad monster as well as being a powerful synthesiser...

Layer two sounds together from 64 extensively multi-sampled waveforms taken from the best digital and analogue synthesisers, modulars as well as tape playback keyboards, valve test oscillators, a certain valve synth from 1939 and more....

Use the large dials to affect tone and 'size'. TONE offers a variation on Z-Plane filtering, sweeping through various filter responses in one rotation. These can be assigned to MIDI continuous controllers for real time control. 'SIZE' offers quick and easy superficial tweaking of envelope times.

The little horizontal slider at the top of the panel is a 'blend' control that allows you to 'morph' between the two layers but this can also be assigned to a MIDI continuous controller for real time control of the balance between the two layers.

And below that, the star-shaped button is the 'serendipity' function that will create new patches at random. It doesn't completely reprogram the entire sound, just offers different combinations of waveforms that you might not otherwise consider.

But if all that's not enough, pressing the EDIT key will provide a panel where you can roll your sleeves up and get down and dirty with the deeper functions of Pulstar...

With two LFOs, a pitch envelope, a multimode filter offering ladder and Pro-53 filters plus lowpass, bandpass, highpass, vowel and phase shifting filters, two ADSR envelopes and a versatile output section, Pulstar is a powerful synthesiser for the adventurous tweakist. Each layer is, of course, individually editable for an outrageous degree of programming flexibility.

And this all passes to a comprehensive effects section...

Selectable 'movement' effects that include chorus or flanging or phase shifting, MIDI-syncable stereo echo and a convolution reverb featuring a wide range of custom impulses.

Hollow Sun's experience of creating soundsets for many of the leading manufacturers' ROMplers since the 90s puts us in a unique position to create such an instrument that is the culmination of 30 years' worth of 'old school' sound design with a futuristic and modern twist. Some samples are simple that span the entire keyboard range giving you that low end aliasing crunch whilst others are detailed and long for precision programming. Either way, in combination, Pulstar allows you to create deep and organic pads which are almost complete soundtracks in their own right. On the other hand, a simple and mellow string 'carpet' to pad out a song is easily achievable and available in the many presets on offer.

This is a 'must have' for anyone who wants to explore texture and soundscapes and a 'go to' instrument for soundtrack composers who require maximum impact with the minimum of effort.

Really really juicy synth in "Pulstar". Very dusty and mysterious and collates a lot of the potential of the MLM's in one place. Fantastic GUI and I dig the "simple" or "advanced" choices. It only takes minutes to craft a very unique sound with all the anomalies of vintage gear, some of it broken or of questionable origin.

I've been using it in the studio and it immediately holds its own with dignity and authority against some pretty big sounding tracks. It is maybe the ultimate pad generator.
Another addictive and rewarding creation from HS.

Wow. Wow. And yes......wow.

I loved what I heard of Pulstar during my visit to the hallowed halls of Hollow Sun Towers, but back here at GTK Central things have just gotten very interesting. The depth of texture and tonality is quite extraordinary, and I will say, quite seriously rivals that of some seriously priced "high-end" synths currently on the market, namely the leviathan that is xxxxxxxxxx. The different controls on the main GUI really do give a lot of control, but when you dip under the surface into the gubbins of the thing, everything changes. This is potentially my favourite HS gizmo to date.

I've been mixing Pulstar with some of the MLM's and holy mother of fcuk, I could do an entire album with just evolving pads and swirly things. My new album just got a whole lot easier - Pulstar, 130P and Cathotron layered and fed through a some seriously dense and long reverb (on an auxillary bus) is something else.

Brilliant work again Stephen, and I feel quite humbled to have been given the opportunity to enjoy this. My weekend will now be lost to Pulstar. Completely.

Wow! I just stumbled upon your site based on this post and have ended up buying several of your instruments. Really fantastic stuff, and very well priced too. Thanks for making these!

Just got back from India yesterday. Today first day back on the computer and your email arrives (right on cue again!) with details of Pulstar -- how could I resist?

Just had a quick play through the presets and fiddled with some of the settings... YES, another wonderful gem from HS.

Fantastic stuff Steve, already my creative juices are flowing again. Can't wait to get stuck in properly...

Love, love, love your stuff

Bought, downloaed and installed Purstar yesterday. All I've got to say is "WOW!!!". What lush, rich sounds are to be found here. This one is a triumph. Nicely done indeed!

I just want to tell you how great Pulstar is. What a great assortment of sounds, and also the aesthetics of the programming are superb! The independent and doubled 64 + 64 groups is a great idea.

I have been making music and creating sounds with digital toys for some time now and I really have to say that I feel like I've stumbled upon something that finally just feels "right" in terms of the entire Hollow Sun approach. Pulstar and the whole crop of MLM's truly have no equal. Pure, immediate visual and aural Bliss! Inspiring in so many ways!

One of your best yet - maybe your best ever. Stunning sounds and not just pads. I can't wait to what you come up with next in this new range.

Good work.

I think Pulstar is one of the best things Hollow Sun have done, and the possibilities are endless with this thing. In an age of austerity, Hollow Sun's affordability is almost as incredible as its fantastic instruments!

Vicsphere - KVR

I got Pulstar today. It's a great instrument!

If you like pads and soundscapes, smooth or complex, you've got them!
It's power seems to me even greater creating multis: to edit and layer patches is pure fun and always pushes me to create more.
Thank You Hollow Sun!!
